Wow! All our summer plans went up in smoke when we got a call that one of my young relatives was in the hospital. Instead of being out of town for only a week, I was gone all summer alternating with others for time in the hospital with this relative. All of us were completely caught off guard because this young relative also had a big exciting summer planned at camp. Yes, let me clearly state that this relative is now doing well. The most painful memories of this summer are probably the daunting hospital bills that remain. Even after insurance covered a portionof the bill, a balance still remains of around $30,000. Would you be ready to handle that bill unexpectedly? The full bill was around $100,000. so we are very grateful for insurance.
As a single mom, buying health insurance has always been a very low priority for me if it did not come with my compensation package at work. My kids have had to go on and off without insurance. I have been grateful they have been healthy.
Readers, please take the time to create a contigency plan for yourself. If you could not work or your child got sick, what would you do? I came home and bought health insurance for my kids because $80 a month seems a lot less than $100,000. Being prepared is often the best remedy.
